WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- With nearly 100 breweries in North Carolina, the craft beer industry is booming in the Tar Heel State.

And, to celebrate the economic boost brews are bringing to the area, Gov. Pat McCrory has named April North Carolina Beer Month.

So, we on the Good Morning Show are taking the opportunity to highlight some of the best beer in the Triad.

This week, Winston-Salem's Foothills Brewing has opened its doors to show viewers how it gets its popular beer from the wheat fields to refrigerators. Brewers will also talk about how the industry is impacting our state.

Foothills was established in 2004 in downtown Winston-Salem. The company brewed about 800 barrels that first year. In 2013, that number was around 27,000 barrels.

Foothills Brewing is best known for its flagship beer, Hoppyum IPA. Some of its seasonal and special release beers include Sexual Chocolate, Foothills Stout and Cottonwood Pumpkin Spiced Ale.

The brewery has two locations in Winston-Salem - it's brewpub restaurant is on 4th St and its 48,000-square-foot brewing facility is located in the Stratford Industrial Park.

And, Foothills is just one of dozens of up-and-coming breweries in North Carolina.

According to the Brewers Association, the state has more breweries than any other state in the Southeast. To break down the numbers, in 2005, there were only 30 breweries in the state of North Carolina. Not even 10 years later, there are about 100 here in the state.

Gov. McCrory announced the inaugural Beer Month in April 2013 to celebrate those breweries, their beer and the culture that's thriving in several North Carolina cities. This year's celebrations will continue to boast the successes of the industry here in the state.
