WFMY -- For the month of June, think about two words: Soul food.
June is "National Soul Food Month" and no one knows soul food quite like Chef Stephanie Tyson of Sweet Potatoes Restaurant in Winston-Salem.
Tyson and co-owner, Vivian Joiner, joined the Good Morning Show crew to show off some of their favorite soul food recipes.
Tyson made "Hot Water Cornbread" and "Fried Fatback" to be served with spicy greens. Check out her recipes below.
Hot Water Cornbread
2 c self -rising cornmeal
1 c. hot water
3 Tbs. oil
Combine cornmeal and hot water in a medium bowl. Drop 2 Tbs at a time in hot oil, press flat and cook until brown, turn and brown the other side. Remove to a paper towel lined platter. Serve hot.
1 pound of sliced fatback
In a medium sauce pan add the fatback and enough water to cover by 2 inches. Bring to a boil and cook for about 15 minutes to remove excess salt. Drain and pat dry with a paper towel. Add fat back to a hot skillet and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 15 minutes.
Sweet Potatoes Restaurant is located on Trade Street in Winston-Salem.
