Burlington, NC -- Cool Planet SnoBalls, a locally-owned Triad business, offers the perfect way to cool down in the heat. But don't confuse them with snow cones.

"These are snowballs. They're made with shaved ice whereas a snow cone is made with crushed ice. Our machine shaves ice and comes out like powder. It's very much like snow," explains co-owner David Parsons.

The snowballs come in dozens of flavors including strawberry, cherry, mango and coffee. One of their most popular flavors is tiger's blood, which is a combination of strawberry, watermelon and a hint of coconut.

The process to make snowballs is fairly simple, which includes shaving ice and pouring flavors on top, but the owners aren't cutting corners. The business, which is owned by two couples the Parsons and the Brooks, makes its own simple syrup. "The cheap and easy way is to use high fructose corn syrup and the product doesn't taste as good. There's no other product around like ours. Nothing can match the taste of our snowballs," said Parsons.

The idea to make snowballs came from co-owner, Paul Brooks, who's grandmother used to sell shaved ice in Maryland. The couples started selling snowballs on street corners in 2009. Three years ago, they moved into a small building on South Mebane Street in Burlington.

You might not find any snow on the ground until next winter, but Cool Planet SnoBalls is happy to give you delicious a cool down. "People were grateful to have something nice and cold and fruity good to eat!"

Cool Planet SnoBalls are also sold at Ace Speedway in Alamance County as well as various events and festivals across the Piedmont. They're also available for private parties and functions.
