WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem Police Department says an officer fired his gun after a man drove away during a traffic stop.

Officer S.W. Houle pulled Kenneth Pinkney Jr. over Sunday night on South Stratford Road. According to the police report, Houle believed Pinkney had controlled substances in the vehicle. That's when police say Pinkney drove away and Houle fired his gun.

Investigators later found Pinkney on Jonestown Road. They say he drove off the road and crashed into a wooded area and was arrested.

Neither the officer, nor the driver were hurt during the incident.

Pinkney is facing felony Speeding to Elude Arrest and is in jail under an $8,000 bond.

Houle has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure in this situation, while the incident is under investigation. He has worked for the Winston-Salem Police Department since 2011.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (336) 727-2800.
