NEW BERN, NC - A chase and a shootout have left a suspect dead and two North Carolina police officers recovering from wounds.
A man New Bern police initially stopped for questioning was shot to death after fleeing from officers late Friday.
According to our sister station, WNCT-TV in Greenville, New Bern Police Chief
says officer Alexander Thalmann stopped the suspect around 11:45 Friday and called for back-up from officer Justin Wester.
He said the suspect bolted and when the officers pursued, the suspect fired shots at the officers, hitting both.
The officers fired back and killed the suspect, whose identity has yet to be released.
Officer Wester and Officer Thalmann were transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Officer Wester was treated and released. Officer Thalmann remains in the hospital, No word on his condition.
Chief Summers says Officer Wester is 23-years-old and has been with the department since November 2012. He says Officer Thalmann is 22-years-old and has been with the department since August 2013.
The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe, as it does in all shootings that involve police.
