WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Police in Winston-Salem have arrested a 19-year-old man they say robbed a store using a butcher knife to threaten the clerk.
Officers went to the Peters Creek BP on Peters Creek Parkway Monday night after receiving a call about an armed robbery. The clerk told officers a man who had a white shirt over his face came inside carrying large butcher knife. Police say he then pushed a store clerk into the corner as he demanded the money.
The store employee said the man went to the check out counter and took the money that the clerk was preparing for deposit. Police said they were told the suspect then ran away from the business heading south along Peters Creek Parkway.
Several officers responded, including a K-9 unit, and they were able to track the suspect and arrest him in the parking lot of First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Police say William Hardy was positively identified as the suspect in the armed robbery.
Hardy was taken into custody and charged with armed robbery of a business. Officers said he had an outstanding warrant on a probation violation.
Police said they recovered Hardy's shirt, the butcher knife and the money he took from the business.
A mug shot will not be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
