ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WCNC) -- China Grove Elementary School went on a lockdown Thursday following an incident involving a first-grade teacher at the school.
WCNC's Tony Burbeck reports that first-grade teacher Rebecca Wilson Daniel, 51, has been charged with misdemeanor assault on a child under 12.
According to authorities on the scene, Daniel grabbed an 8-year-old by the arm and poked him in chest while scolding the boy.
Daniel was not arrested, but rather served and given a written notice to appear in court.
The campus went on lockdown around 9 a.m.
School officials tell WCNC that three locations are under a yellow, precautionary lockdown: China Grove Elementary, and two administrative locations, one in Spencer and one in Salisbury.
The yellow, precautionary lockdown means there will be no outside activities, and students are not allowed outside of the building. Only parents with proper ID can check their children out of school and escort them from the building.
The school, along with both administrative locations, will remain on the yellow lockdown for the remainder of the day.
There is a police presence on the campus.
Rowan-Salisbury schools has not commented on the status of Daniel's employment.
Daniel is due in court July 8.
