A Piedmont chef creates a sweet, spicy, tangy sauce inspired by his New Orleans background

Greensboro, NC -- The menu at Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen in Greensboro changes every six weeks but one of the staples is Voodoo Sauce.

"We like to call it table sauce for grown up," explains Chef Jay Pierce.

Pierce invented the sauce in 2007. The ingredients include sugar, Texas Pete hot sauce, cider vinegar, brown mustard, garlic and other spices.

"Think about it like a buddy to salt and pepper. Anything salt and pepper goes on, voodoo sauce can go on. It amplifies flavor. A little sweet, sour, spice, it's fantastic," says Pierce.

Lucky 32 includes Voodoo sauce on several menu items including bread, fried green tomatoes and salad dressing.

The inspiration behind Voodoo Sauce is Pierce's roots in Louisiana. Pierce grew up in New Orleans and worked in some of celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse's restaurants. "This sauce is a little down the evolutionary chain of things I've served or been exposed to when I worked in New Orleans," says Pierce.

The sauce has become so popular, the restaurant began bottling it in 2011. Now, it's sold at The Fresh Market stores all across the country.

In the Triad, Voodoo Sauce can also be purchased at Whole Foods, Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods. Lucky 32 offers recipes that include Voodoo Sauce on its website www.lucky32.com
