GREENSBORO, NC -- 2WTK wants you to be able to put a face with a name. Thomas Jeffrey Hayes was arrested this weekend....again. The arrest happened during a traffic stop. The officer saw Hayes was going to fast and pulled him over. When the officer ran Hayes' name, three warrants for arrest came up.
Guilford County Sheriff's deputies charged Hayes with 3 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Basically, he didn't pay his bill to Southern Safes & Vaults, Inc. Lots of people don't pay their bills, so why is Hayes different?
Guilford County Fraud investigator Chrystal Overcash says, "We all know Mr. Hayes and he's becoming familiar with us and he's beginning to show a pattern. And the intent of getting products or services from people and never completing the service or paying for the product, he's clearly showing a history of intent to defraud these people."
2WTK knows Hayes well too. We tracked him down last May for viewers who were owed money. At the time he was using the name Amazing Grace Locksmiths. The Guilford County Sheriff's office wanted him for fraud charges not related to our cases.
Hayes' latest company name and website is American Locksmith Enterprises
Guilford County Sheriff's deputies say Hayes bought new safe codes and keys from Southern Safes & Vault in December 2013 and January 2014. Hayes owes the company $470. Southern Safes & Vault has tried for months to get Hayes to pay. Because of his history and pending fraud charges, a judge felt the non-payment was worthy of charges.
2WTK talked to the co-owner of Southern Safes & Vault Monday. When co-owner Donna Snyder heard Hayes was arrested this weekend on charges related to her business, she was happy. But when she learned he paid to bond out of jail--at least $1000---but he hadn't answered her last 5 phone calls....
"I'm floored he even had that money and that he had a very small bill that he wouldn't even talk to me about. I get angry when people won't call me back. I will work with you for months if I know. But be honest with me."
Donna and Southern Safes & Vault had no idea of Hayes' history. She had no idea he was facing other fraud charges and was just in Superior Court.
According to the Guilford County Sheriff's department, Hayes' attorney told the judge they weren't ready to accept a plea deal and needed more time. Now these charges from Southern Safes & Vaults will be added.
As with our past stories, we will be contacting Hayes and his lawyer and the businesses who hired Hayes to change those safe codes and make keys.
