ARCHDALE, N.C. -- The Archdale Police Department says one of its officers is out of the hospital after a suspected intoxicated driver hit the officer's patrol car.

Police say it happened Tuesday just before 8:30 p.m. on Gregg Street. Officer Jeffries was responding to a suspected intoxicated driver. But before Jeffries could initiate contact with the suspect the man in the car accelerated and hit the patrol officer's car.

Doctors at High Point Regional Health Systems treated and released Jeffries for minor injuries.

Police arrested Vernon Timothy Dehart. He's charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury, two counts of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Driving While Impaired.

Dehart is in the Randolph County Jail on a $1,001,000 bond.
