DANVILLE, Va.-- Police in Danville are investigating the theft of manhole covers and manhole inserts. According to a news release, the thefts were reported Saturday, February 28.
Police said 45 manhole covers and manhole inserts were illegally removed from remote areas of the city. A total of 33 manhole covers and manhole inserts were reported stolen.
The manholes were taken from along the pipeline that runs adjacent to Water St. and continues to the area of Wrenn Dr., investigators said. To take the covers, police said the supporting manhole frame is being broken free from its concrete base and to do this requires considerable effort and the possible use of heavy equipment such as a tractor or a backhoe.
These items are typically stolen for their value as proprietary scrap metal.
Police warn that Virginia State Code instructs scrap metal processors to obtain paperwork such as bill of sale and / or receipts, or to document a diligent inquiry as to the seller having legal right to sell the proprietary articles such as manhole covers and manhole inserts.
