GREENSBORO, NC—At one point Monday night, EMS was on scene at 20 different wrecks across the county.
Guilford County EMS asked drivers to stay off the roads Monday night and to avoid bridges at all costs. The scanners in the WFMY Information Center started buzzing with accident after accident related to icy conditions on the road.
Perhaps the worst of what WFMY News 2 Liz Crawford saw was on a Merritt Drive bridge over Patterson Street. A six car pile-up resulted because of the slick conditions on the road.
A police officer on scene told WFMY a pick-up truck spun out of control and then five cars tried to dodge the truck and lost control too. There were chunks of ice formed around the tires involved in the wreck. No injuries were reported but officers said victims were slipping all night just walking around the area.
Two police cars were blocking off a bridge on Holden Road over the Bryan Boulevard. One officer told WFMY the entire overpass was a sheet of ice.He said you could skate on it.The officer said all the bridges in his patrol area were slick and salt wasn't working. He wanted to check on other bridges just a few miles away but didn't want to leave his spot on Holden Road because of the severity of the ice.
And on the Spring Garden Road exit just off Wendover Avenue was also treacherous.Minutes before WFMY arrived a woman had lost control. Her car did a complete 180 and ended up turned around on the grass near the railroad tracks. The officer askedour crew to leave because it simply wasn't safe.
