Duke Energy Racks Up Violations
EDEN, N.C. -- Duke Energy continues to rack up violations.
The company has received 8 environmental violations in one month.
The state claims these pictures show Duke Energy illegally pumping contaminated water into the Cape Fear River from two of its coal ash basins at a retired plant. Governor Pat McCrory says the violations are unacceptable.
"These violations are unacceptable," Governor McCrory said. "They've waited far to long to come out of the shadows and explain what they planned to do."
State Representative Mike Hager worked as an engineer for Duke for 17 years. CBS News asked him if Duke was guilty of kicking this problem down the road.
"I think every utility in the United States is guilty about that," Hager said. "I think it's going to be one of the largest projects we've ever taken on in North Carolina."
