HIGH POINT, N.C. -- High Point University honored Olympic speed skater Heather Richardson on campus Thursday.
Students and staff at HPU packed the Hayworth Fine Arts Center for the Hometown Hero Celebration. The celebration honored her Winter Olympics appearances and her World Cup championships. High Point City Councilman Britt Moore announced, April 3 as 'Heather Richardson Day' in High Point. She was also presented the key to the city of High Point at the ceremony.
She was also recognized for her support against the battle of cancer.
Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president said in a news release, "We celebrate our city and the people in it who do wonderful things. Today, we show Heather that we love her, that we admire her, and that she's brought our hometown much honor."
Richardson represented the city of High Point and the U.S. recently in Sochi during the 2014 Winter Olympics. She also captured the championship at 1,000 meters at the World Cup.
