JAMESTOWN, N.C. -- They say age is just a number and there's a 97-year-old who proves it everyday and it's getting him national attention. The attention is not because of his age, it's because of the hours he gives back to his community, specifically one school in Guilford County.

On Monday, Guilford County schools honored volunteer Thurman Haynes, the oldest volunteer in the district. Thurman is 97-years-old and the national winner of the Salute to Senior Service contest. He says he serves because he loves the kids.

Haynes has lived through two world wars. This is his fifth year volunteering at the Meredith Leigh Haynes Bennie Inman Education Center. The school is named after his granddaughter.
