GREENSBORO, N.C. – Forest Oaks Country Club will reopen Thursday, under new management.
A Forest Oaks employee told WFMY News 2 that a new group will take over club operations from ES2 Sports & Leisure. The name of the company has not been released yet because officials say no contract is in place.
An employee says some of the staff are back to work and the country club should be back to normal on Thursday.
On Tuesday, chains on the main entrance greeted club members. Two signs posted on the doors said Forest Oaks was closed until further notice and cited bankruptcy court.
Club members have been very outspoken about their disappointment in the club management as well as Ricky Proehl. His name is familiar to most because of his time on the field for Wake Forest and the Carolina Panthers. Remember, last year the club was renamed Proehlific Club at Forest Oaks.
Club members told us Proehl got up in front of the members last year to boast how things were going to change. "I did get up there," said Proehl. "If I didn't believe that we could turn this thing around and build something special there, of course I wouldn't have put my name on it. That's why I'm saying I got burned too. I'm the one that looks like a fool and everyone wants to take pot shots at Ricky Proehl and my character. Again, I got burned just like the members did. I feel for the members. I did it because I wanted to help."
Proehl says he never received a dime from the club even though he was supposed to get a percentage of the profits. When WFMY News 2 asked him if he plans to partner with this new management company, he says he wants to hear their plans before deciding, but he's not ruling it out.
