RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -- A Randleman High School teacher turned himself in Wednesday after he was wanted for multiple counts of Indecent Liberties with a Student.
Randolph County deputies told WFMY News 2, Hazem M. Eldara was not arrested earlier because he was reportedly out of the country.
In December 2013, an investigation began with the Sheriff's Office and Randolph County Schools concerning an assault of a student at Randleman High School.
The Randolph County Sheriff's Office said they seized digital media devices as a result of their investigation. After they looked through the devices, deputies said they found evidence of additional crimes.
Sheriff Maynard Reid said a total of eight victims have been identified. All but one of the victims are current or former students of Eldara. The other victim is an adult who worked at Randleman High School with him. Reid says due to the nature of the crimes and the fact that many of the victims are minors, their names are not being released.
On Monday, February 3, 2014, the evidence was presented to the Randolph County Grand Jury. The Grand Jury found probable cause for the original charge of Indecent Liberties with a Student (Felony). They also found probable cause for 19 additional counts of Indecent Liberties with a Student, 18 counts of Secret Use of a Photographic Imaging Device to view another, and 18 counts of Possession of Photographic Image obtained in Violation of Secret Peeping Statues.
Eldara is currently in Randolph County Jail under a $2,750,000 bond.
