A fifth-grader told police he found a gun at the bus stop on Apple Street and brought it to Smith Elementary Wednesday.
BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Burlington Police have launched an investigation after a male student was found in possession of a gun while at Smith Elementary School Wednesday.
According to the School's Resource Officer (SRO), they received information about the gun while looking into a complaint of bullying involving a fifth-grade student.
Officers interviewed the male student, who was not part of the bullying investigation, and he said he found the gun on Apple Street while waiting at the bus stop and put it in his book bag.
Police said there was no bullet in the chamber of gun, but one was in a magazine.
Officers say appropriate law enforcement actions will be taken after the investigation is complete. Alamance-Burlington Schools (ABSS) say they will also take administrative actions with the students involved.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Burlington Police at (336) 229-3503 or Crime Stoppers at (336) 229-7100.
