Simply saying thank you isn't enough for the heroes who risked their lives for our freedom. That's why WFMY News 2 gave the greatest generation a gift they will never forget.

Around 7:30 Friday morning, WFMY and Rotary 7690 left Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem with 127 World War II veterans on an honor trip to the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va.

WFMY showed you the veterans' stories with in-depth coverage before, during and after the trip, happening on the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

After the trip, there was a welcome home ceremony at Hanes Mall to give the veterans a homecoming they never received, but always deserved.

The welcome home celebration begam at 6 p.m.. Crowds of people came with cards, signs, and banners to give our local heroes. There was also a banner for people to sign to further show our veterans our appreciation.
