GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A Cherryville woman ripped-off the Department of Veterans Affairs, according to the Gaston County Police Department, by taking thousands of dollars allotted to someone else.

Police arrested Amber Nicole Chapman, 30, on fraud charges.

They say they former caretaker of a V.A. beneficiary continued to accept money after the veteran died. She allegedly withdrew the money after fraudulently obtaining a debit card. Chapman was not related to the beneficent.

An internal investigation prompted the department to contact Gaston Police.

Chapman is accused of receiving $22,000 and is charged with obtaining property by false pretense, computer fraud and forgery. She was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
