CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police conducted a search for Bianca Richardson Tanner on Thursday morning. During a news conference, CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe confirmed the case is now a homicide investigation.

"I just don't want to sit on this one," explained Chief Monroe.

He added, "We just don't feel that this is a simple missing person case."

Earlier in the day, police searched the 1000 block of Druid Circle in North Charlotte. That is where Tanner was last seen on June 8.

Chief Monroe said elevating the case to homicide investigation means they can add more resources. The search is still active. Tanner's 3-year-old son is with his biological father.

She was reported missing by her boyfriend on Sunday afternoon.

On Thursday evening, CMPD officers were back at the townhouse Tanner shared with her boyfriend, taking pictures and collecting evidence.

Tanner just moved to the Charlotte area from Greensboro. She has been commuting back to the Triad for her job as a second-grade teacher at Reedy Fork Elementary.

Amy Renshaw's son, Austin, was in Tanner's class last year.

"She went out of her way to make sure that the students succeeded," said Amy Renshaw, Austin's mother.

She added, "Words cant describe what a wonderful person she is."

Renshaw said when her 9-year-old son came home from school on Tuesday, he told her he heard Ms. Tanner was missing.

"He told me that he said a prayer for her."

Renshaw continued, "I hateā€¦.. everything that's going on. It breaks my heart and my son, he had to go see the counselor today because he was upset and emotional. We are just saying prayers and wishing for the best."

Austin told WFMY News 2 he misses his teacher. He wants her to know, "That we really miss her and we hope that somebody finds her."

Tanner is a 31-year-old black female with brown hair and eyes, standing about 5-foot-3 and weighing 110 pounds. She was last seen wearing a red tank top, black shorts and black flats.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information concerning the case.

If you have any information on Tanner's whereabouts, you're asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600 immediately.
