GREENSBORO, N.C. – The International Civil Rights Center and Museum (IRCRM) is honoring a man who played at a "whites only" golf course during the 1950's.

The late Dr. George C. Simkins Jr. along with five other African Americans protested against segregation by playing at Gillespie Park Golf Course.

The museum held a Pairings Party Friday night which featured a silent auction and raffle. Dr. Simkin's children served as honorary co-chairs for the event.

Saturday, a George C. Simkins Jr. Memorial Golf Classic will be held at Bryan Park. The registration starts at 7 a.m. followed by an 8 a.m. tee time.
