CHARLOTTE, N.C. – U.S. Marshals arrested the boyfriend of missing Guilford County Schools teacher, Bianca Tanner. Angelo Grayson Smith, Jr. was arrested in Homewood, Illinois on Thursday. Smith is charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police issued the warrant for Smith's arrest on Sunday. On Wednesday, the agency requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals' office to find and arrest Smith.

Smith was arrested about 35 miles south of Chicago. Charlotte police were in the area shortly after his arrest to confirm Smith's identity.

It's unclear at this point if Smith will waive extradition and agree to be placed in the custody of CMPD or if there will be an extradition hearing.

The warrant was issued two weeks after Tanner disappeared. Smith reported her missing on June 8 and is believed to be the last person to see Tanner.

Tanner is a teacher at Reedy Fork Elementary School in Greensboro but recently moved to Charlotte to live with Smith. Search warrants suggest Smith and Tanner might have gotten into an argument before her disappearance. Smith told police Tanner left their apartment on Druid Circle in Charlotte shortly before midnight on June 7, carrying a bag with her.

Police interviewed Tanner's 3-year-old son who said, "Mommy got a spanking with a belt. Angelo kicked mommy's butt and made her cry". The search warrants also say the child said, "Angelo is mean to mommy and hurt mommy in the face."

Angelo has not been named a suspect in this case.

Tanner's sister, Cerise Richardson, told WFMY News 2's Morgan Hightower she was shocked when she learned Smith was arrested near Chicago.

"I really didn't think that he would one, leave Charlotte, being that his girlfriend is missing in Charlotte and two, that that authorities still wanted to question him," explained Richardson.

"When I heard the news I was just like, 'Oh my gosh'."

Richardson says when Tanner disappeared, her family was empathetic towards Smith. She said they reached out to him to make sure he was doing 'OK', but she says, that compassion was never shared.

"At this point, no I don't feel empathy, because at this point, [Smith has] brought it on [himself] as far as people having suspicious and doubts about [him]."

"[Smith] kind of brought that on [himself] because [he] is not cooperating, [he is] not searching for her, [he isn't] trying to put the family's mind at ease."

Richardson says despite the trouble with Smith, her family is staying focused on finding her sister.

"At this point, it's not about pointing fingers or accusing people, it's about finding Bianca and bringing her home to us safely."

Smith's attorney, Kenneth Snow, said Smith was not trying to run from police.

"My conversation with him, he said he was preparing to return back to Charlotte, but obviously he was not aware of the warrant when he left. He was made aware of the warrant at some point and of course, his indications to me was that he was planning to come back and that's what we were planning to do," said Snow.

When asked when Smith was planning to return to Charlotte, Snow said there was not a specific date in mind.

As of Thursday night, Smith is still in the custody of U.S. Marshals. It's unclear when he will be extradited or if he will waive extradition.
