GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Nearly 44 percent of deaths Fourth of July weekend are tied to drinking and driving.

Booze It and Lose It Operation Firecracker is in full force this weekend. Sergeant James Jackson with Highway Patrol is still compiling the numbers of arrests so far. He said the Guilford County task force arrests between 1,200 and 1,400 people for drinking while impaired throughout the year. He said so far "booze it and lose it" has been effective.

"I think the campaign has been effective, Jackson said.

He said it could be better, but with the call volume troopers are constantly getting pulled away for other calls.

Jackson said anyone who is going to drink should have a designated driver or get a cab. If you see someone driving while impaired call star HP from your cell phone.
