ALAMANCE COUNTY – The Alamance County Sheriff's Department arrested 36-year-old Aaron Nishikawa, a registered sex offender, after investigators said he took pictures and possibly videos up a girl's skirt at a local business. The department would not release the name of the business because it's part of the investigation. It said there could be multiple victims, all girls, ages eight to 12 years old.
Prosecutors charged Nishikawa with indecent liberties with a child and a probation violation. He lives in Mebane. This isn't his first offense. He was convicted of indecent liberties with a child in Wake County. Nishikawa is in jail on a $170,000 bond.
The department said his probation officer found out about the images and told the sheriff's department on Tuesday. Deputies searched his computer and phone and found the inappropriate material and arrested him Thursday. Kirk Puckett, a spokesperson for the sheriff's department, said they're just glad they caught Nishikawa when they did.
"No one wants to see a child be harmed in any way and we think the arrest of this individual has probably prevented a child from being harmed," Puckett said.
No parents reported anything suspicious involving Nishikawa, so the department is having a hard time identifying the victim or victims. It plans on pulling surveillance video from the business to help with the investigation. It also is trying to determine when the pictures were taken.
Puckett said there's no good way to understand the minds of these offenders.
"I'm not sure that there's a way to understand it other than to identify it as a bit of a sickness. It is obviously a mental issue that some of these individuals have that sometimes is curable with counseling and many times it is incurable, that's why we have repeat offenders," he said.
Nishikawa had his first court appearance on Friday where he was appointed an attorney.
