DURHAM, N.C.-- Former Greensboro Police Chief Tim Bellamy has been suspended from North Carolina Central University. Bellamy was arrested for suspicion of driving while impaired at a license check point on E. Lee St near I-40 in Greensboro early Saturday morning.

In a statement from North Carolina Central University "North Carolina Central University is aware of the Arrest of Timothy Bellamy, NCCU Chief of Police, on August 2, 2014. Chief Bellamy has been suspended with pay on accordance with university policies and procedures. As this is a legal matter, we are confident that the jurisdictions involved will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Bellamy was released on a written promise to appear in court with a court date scheduled for September 4.
