GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A store that has been a staple in Greensboro for decades is closing for good.
Thursday, a spokesperson with Sears Holding, confirmed to WFMY News 2 that the Kmart store on Bridford Parkway will close to the public in early November. The store will begin its liquidation sale on August 17, but will remain open to customers, Howard Riefs said.
The store has 96 employees who will all lose their jobs. Reifs said employees were told Tuesday that the store would be closing.
Riefs said, "Store closures are part of a series of actions we're taking to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home."
The company will offer severance to associates who qualify and other employees will be offered an opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. Most of the associates are part-time or hourly, according to Riefs.
