CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- A former minister at a Charlotte church is facing more than two dozen additional charges of sexual assault involving children. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told local media outlets that 64-year-old Orlando Augusto Caldera is accused of assaulting children between ages 6 and 10.
Police have charged Caldera with 26 felonies, in addition to the two indecent liberties with a child charges filed last week. Caldera served for about five years as a minister at Memorial United Methodist Church. He is no longer listed by the church as a staff member.
Caldera was arrested Aug. 4 when police were called to the church to deal with a disturbance. Officers found a woman and a 10-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl. It was not clear if Caldera has an attorney.
SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, released this statement:Orlando Augusto Caldera was a minister at Memorial United Methodist Church. A 6 year old, a 10 year old and one of the children's mother reported to police that Caldera had sexually abused them. Their bravery encouraged an additional 5 victims to come forward. We hope anyone else who was hurt by Caldera, or any other church officials, will find the courage to speak up, report what they know to police, protect others, and start healing.
