DANVILLE, V.A. -- Police say a drunk driver caused a gas explosion that damaged an apartment building and put 14 people out of their homes early Saturday morning in Danville.
Officers with Danville Police they obtained a warrant for the driver, James T. Barksdale, 36, of Danville, for driving while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license.
Barksdale was driving a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica. He was heading east on Guildford Street when he crossed over the north and south lanes of Arnett Boulevard, drove off the road and hit an apartment building.
The crash caused gas lines to sever at the meters, causing the building to fill with a high level of gas. This then triggered an explosion that caused the building to catch fire.
Power and gas service has been shut off to the building. Damages are estimated to be about $500,000.
Police Barksdale's car suffered about $2,000 worth of damage.
Danville Police and the Fire Marshal's Office say the investigation is ongoing.
