GARLAND, N.C.-- Deputies in Sampson County said six people died in a house fire early Saturday morning in Garland.
The fire happened around 1 a.m. at a residence on Gibbs Road just outside of Garland. By the time first responders arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.
Captain E.L. Pope said they haven't been able to determine a cause of the fire yet, but they don't expect foul play.
Captain Pope said this tragedy is taking a toll on the small community, but also the first responders. Many of them are volunteers. "When folks volunteer to help out their community, they don't expect to go to a disaster where you have such a large number of fatalities from your own community. So that takes a hit too. When you're responding to your neighbor's house, it takes a toll."
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
