HICKORY, N.C. --Sunday evening around 7:40, Hickory Police responded to the 1100 block of 6th Street Northwest. Police say 17-year-old David Arthur Engelmann, of Hickory, was driving a 2006 Subaru Forester when it struck the curb, flipped several times and came to a rest in a grassy field.

Englemann was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Englemann's passenger, 17-year-old Jay Brian Robertson, II, of Hickory, was taken to Frye Regional Medical center where he was pronounced deceased.

Upon Engelmann's release from the hospital, police charged him with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, possession of an open container, driving after consuming by a provisional licensee and careless and reckless driving.

He has since been released on a $10,000 bond.

Police believe alcohol and speed to be factors in the crash, and say neither Engelmann nor Robertson were wearing seat belts.
