Guilford County, N.C. -- You blinked and your children grew up. Your little one is getting older and it's time to enroll them in Kindergraten.

We know the transition isn't always easy so WFMY News 2's Tracey McCain asked Aaron Woody, principal of Lindley Elementary and Teresa Loflin from the High Point Museum to talk about an event to get parents and new students ready.

Even though students don't start the new school year until August 25, 2014, Principal Woody said parents should start talking with their children about going to school in a positive way to get them excited and ready.

Principal Woody offered the following tips:

1. Read stories to your child regularly, then ask questions.

2. Ask your child to tell stories.

3. Practice identifying letters and colors.

4. Provide opportunities to cut, paste, draw and write.

Teresa Loflin explained the many services that will be available to parents during the free Kindergarten Parent Days.

They are Kindergarten curriculum, school choice and magnet options, transportation, school nutrition, after-school care options, English as a Second Language and Exceptional Children Services. Additionally, representatives from neighborhood libraries, doctor's offices and community programs will be on hand to talk about their services.

Parents will not be able to register their children for Kindergarten that day. Registration opens March 3, 2014. Children who turn 5-years-old by August 31, 2014 will be eligible to enroll in Kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year.

Woody recommends you should use this time to gather the required documents needed to register your child for school. Those items include a birth certificate, Kindergarten Health Assessment, immunization record and proof of residence.

The first Parent Day is scheduled for Monday, February 17, 2014. It will take place at the High Point Museum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The second one is Monday, March 10, 2014 at the Greensboro Children's Museum. Both events are free.
