Greensboro, N.C. - We don't talk much about it, but everyday thousands quietly suffer from Lupus.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks normal, healthy tissue. It causes inflammation, swelling, damage to the joints, skin, kidneys, blood, the heart and lungs.

Keva Brooks-Napper even experienced hair loss. Brooks-Napper is the executive director of Beautiful Butterflies, Inc. and is what she calls a Lupus "thriver" and educator.

"Even though you deal with pain, you have to think about how I bounced back and overcame that challenge," said Brooks-Napper.

On Saturday, March 8, 2014 she and her Beautiful Butterflies, Inc. foundation held an awareness luncheon and educational event to help others.

"Lupus patients spend a mean average of $12,000 to $62,000 a year on medical expenses," said Brooks-Napper. "They need support."

The 4th Annual Beautiful Butterflies Lupus Awareness Luncheon featured professional football player Joshua Morgan of the Washington Redskins. "I was speechless when I found out that 1 in 250 African American women will be diagnosed with Lupus," said the NFL player.

The event was held Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. The health symposium starts at 8:30 a.m. with the luncheon immediately following at 11:30 a.m.
