KERNERSVILLE, N.C. -- Highway Patrol says a woman has died after her car crashed into a Kernersville pond Friday morning.

Trooper Chris Knox says the investigating officer's initial synopsis reveals the crash happened at 1:24 a.m. The 20-year-old driver of a 2002 Ford Focus was traveling on Warner Road near Haw River Road when her car crossed the center line, traveled off the roadway to the left and went through the tree line. The car continued to cross a field and went into a pond. The car was completely submerged in water approximately 12-feet deep.

Knox says rescue divers made several attempts to get the driver out of the car, which was pulled from water at 3:15 a.m.

The driver, 20-year-old Chelsey Herrington from Belews Creek, was pronounced dead at Moses Cone at 4:21 a.m. Highway Patrol says her next of kin has been notified.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the accident. Knox says the initial synopsis does not indicate whether Herrington made any attempt to brake when her car veered toward the pond. The synopsis also does not indicate whether speed or alcohol were factors.
