Firefighters say an employee at Carolina Containers Company was filling a propane cylinder when it somehow caught fire, and caused an explosion early this morning.

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- High Point Police say one person is in the hospital, after a propane tank caught fire caused an explosion at Carolina Container Co. in High Point early Tuesday morning.

Police say the call came in at 12:33 a.m., and fire fighters remained on scene at the building, located on Prospect Street, throughout the morning to ensure no hot spots reignited.

The source of the fire in the propane tank is yet unknown, but deputy fire chief Tim Wright explained an employee of Carolina Container was filling propane a propane cylinder when it ignited, caused adjacent cylinders to catch fire and subsequently caused an explosion. Wright described the scene as a "ball of fire."

The fire department has a station located just down the street from Carolina container, so Wright said fire fighters arrived on scene within one or two minutes of receiving the call. He said the crew on the first truck quickly called for backup.

Wright said the employee tried to run from the flames but sustained burns that caused him to be taken to the hospital. The employee's injuries, according to Wright, are not life-threatening.

Damage is concentrated along one portion of the lengthy building, and the deputy chief said fire fighters had to remove part of the roof to ensure the fire had been fully extinguished.

"This is a big building, so it could have been a lot worse," Wright said.

As of 7:45 a.m., both lanes of Prospect Street had been reopened, and fire fighters had left the scene.

According to its website, Carolina Container makes packaging materials.
