ROCKINGHAM, NC -- If you have a need for speed, this weekend is all about racing in Rockingham. Everything from drag cars, to funny cars, to motorcycles will take the track this weekend.
Mark Cox is one of the speedsters who'll be on the track. He rides a Nitro Harley, one of the most radical, extreme classes in all of drag racing. They exceed speeds of 220 mph and cover the quarter-mile in a little over six seconds all on only one wheel.
The riders wear a helmet, but they also wear Kevlar. That's the same thing that police bulletproof vests are made out of. Drivers are required to wear a Kevlar vest when racing in the event of an engine failure to protect their body. This is the only class in the world where roll cages and safety nets are nowhere to be found.
Cox is originally from Wilkesboro, will be in Rockingham at the Rockingham Dragway this weekend for the Spring Jam Nationals.
Again, the Spring Nationals are Saturday and Sunday at the Rockingham Dragway. Saturday's session starts at 7:00 pm and Sunday's session starts at 1:00pm.
