GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The International Civil Rights Center and Museum (ICRCM) in downtown Greensboro unveiled Monday its new exhibit, which depicts--through enlarged stamps--pivotal moments of the Civil Rights Movement.

Museum curator and director of programs Bamidele Demerson explained the exhibit displays the U.S. Postal Service's role in furthering the promotion of civil rights. USPS issued two series of stamps--To Form a more Perfect Union (2005) and Civil Rights Pioneers (2009), in which it reproduced art and photography images of civil rights milestones.

Enlarged versions of these stamps comprise the museum's new exhibit--The Art of Activism. The images on the stamps are in chronological order and range from the post-World War II integration of the armed services in 1948 to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Demerson and museum executive director Lacy Ward, Jr. reiterated the exhibit's emphasis on visuals. They said the exhibit is family-friendly and provides a valuable educational opportunity for children to learn about civil rights.

Demerson said the exhibit, owned by the museum, is temporary but will be up throughout the summer. It is free with the purchase of a general admission ticket.

Several of the exhibit's images convey the pivotal fight to desegregate public accommodations, like schools, hospitals and golf courses. In light of the history-changing efforts of Dr. George Simkins, who sued Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro City Schools and the Gillespie Park Golf Course, the International Civil Rights Center and Museum will hold its annual George C. Simkins Memorial Golf Classic.

The Museum's board of directors chair Deena Hayes-Greene said the Classic will be June 21 with a 7 a.m. sign-in. Contact the museum for more information.
