Greensboro's Fun Fourth celebrates 40 years and the annual parade was bigger and just as festive for 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- This Independence Day marks the 40th anniversary of the

FunFourth Festival and Parade

, which will be reverting to its historic roots and providing a slightly different experience for its devoted attendees.

This year, the festival will be centered around Hamburger Square (S. Elm and McGee Streets at the roundabout near McCoul's), where the festival began 40 years ago. Hamburger Square's history dates back farther than four decades, as it was a hub for soldiers to wait for troop trains during World War I.

The parade, which begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday, will start this year by the Lincoln Financial building. It will process down south on Greene Street and turn west on Washington Street (before the Carolina Theatre) and disband north on Eugene Street.

WFMY News 2's tent will be located near Carolina Theatre, and the WFMY News 2 float is seventh in the parade line up.

The new festival location will cause some road closures different from those in years past:

  • South Greene St. and South Elm blocked from Market Street to Smothers Place
  • Washington St. blocked from Davie St. to Eugene St.
  • McGee St. blocked at Federal Place
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive blocked at train tracks near Natty Greene's

The festival is offering a number of free parking locations:

  • Lot on Greene Street at Market Street (near federal courthouse)
  • Greene Street Parking Deck at Greene Street at Washington Street
  • Garage on Davie Street at Market Street (near ATM)
  • Garage at Davie street and February One (near Civil Rights Center and Museum)
  • Lot at Davie Street and Washington Street
