GREENSBORO, N.C -- Our home renovation expert Tom Garcia is showing you how easy it is to give your home a fresh look.
There are great tools out there to make painting much simpler than it used to be. There are different types of buckets and containers and even slips within the containers to make it easier to clean. One of the most important things to have is a great brush.
Tom usually emphasizes saving money, but when it comes to a paint brush, you don't want to pinch pennies here. It can make all the difference in the world. Another very important component is painters tape. It is used on corners and edges to make a nice clean line without all the hassle of trying to cut in. Don't forget the drop cloth so you can cover up your furniture and floor.
If you have dark walls such as paneling or cabinetsand you want to lighten them up, you need to start with primer. Primer looks and feels likepaint, but it adheres to the surface better than regularpaint. Once the primer is applied, youcan apply the paint like normal.
Asalways, whenever you're painting you want to practice good ladder safety. Remember, ladders are only useful up until about the last step. You never want to gohigher than that because you might lose your balance and fall. There is also some great ladder technology, where ladders can extend up to 12.5 feet but they can be stored at around 3 feet.
When it comes to what kind of paint you should use. Tom says generally you want to use latex paint which is water based. It iseasy to use and clean up whereas oil based paint requires paint solvent to clean up,
The next key decision is what level of sheen you want foryour painted surfaces. Generally flat sheen is used for walls, and gloss or semigloss is used for trim.
