The Teacher Supply Warehouse helps Guilford County teachers stock their classrooms with much-needed supplies.
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Take 30 seconds and ask yourself this question. Say you have pinched the pennies and managed to save $500. How would you spend your hard-earned cash?
Would you treat yourself and give a little to family. Or pour it back into your job.
For Faulkner Elementary teacher, Wendy Shelton, the choice is easy. She's been forced to make it year after year.
Shelton spends anywhere from $600 to $700 a year on school supplies for students in her classroom.
"It's not necessarily fair, but it's what we agreed to do as teachers to help our children," said Shelton.
The Guilford County teacher's out-of-pocket expenses fall in line with the national numbers. The report says teachers spend between $500 and $800 a year on classroom materials and other supplies students need.
"Usually, we get a lot of donations in the beginning of the year, and then after that they dwindle," said Shelton. "After that, its on us, so I go to the store and get what I need and what the kids need."
There's a lot we can do as a community to ease the financial strain on teachers, while improving learning for students and education in general.
Louise Courts works with the G.E.A. The organization supports teachers and education initiatives in Guilford County.
Courts stressed the items every teacher needs, but also stressed the need for individual donors and more community partners.
"The teachers get so excited when they come to the Warehouse," said Courts. "And they're thrilled when they can get the simplest thing," she added.
