ROCKINGHAM COUNTY,. NC --Multiple agencies rescued a family of ten people on the Dan River Sunday morning.

Squad Chief Rusty Gray says it took crews around six hours to find and rescue the family of three adults and seven juveniles from an island in the middle of the river.

A Reidsville family of 12 set out on a tubing trip Saturday around 4 p.m. from the Settle's Bridge access point. They were headed to the area of Bethlehem Church Road, Gray said. The family expected the trip to take about three hours, though officials say it's typically a 10-hour journey.

Gray says, when it started to get dark, and the temperature began to drop, the family sent two "younger, stronger" people to find help. The two eventually found someone with a phone and called rescue teams to the area of Bent Farm Road around 3:30 a.m.

It took a single rescue boat one hour to find the family on the island. Gray says it took another three hours to get to the family on land through a heavily wooded area. Crews needed four-wheelers to get to the family and rope them into shore.

Gray says none of the rescued tubers needed medical attention after the rescue.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office, Madison-Rockingham Rescue Squad, Eden Rescue Squad and Shiloh Fire Department assisted in the rescue mission.
