Tampa, Florida — One injured Tampa veteran is hoping for an Easter weekend miracle.
Luke Macner is still taking pain pills after a car crash at Causeway Blvd. and U.S. 41 left him hospitalized Thursday with bruises and a broken collar bone.
"When I went to hit the brake pedal, I tapped the gas pedal accidentally," Macner said.
Macner only has one leg, which is why he went to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.
"She just makes me feel good whenever I see her," he said.
He went to find a service dog, and found Nina, a one and a half-year-old German Shepherd-Rottweiler mix.
"I'm lost without the dog. I really am," Macner said.
Nina ran off after the Thursday accident.
Luke said it's been a tough 48 hours without Nina, laid up in a hospital bed, but he's waiting for a miracle.
"Let somebody find you and please bring you back to me," he said, holding up a photo of his pet.
Macner said people from New York to California have heard about his story through social media. There have been hundreds of comments and thousands of shares on the Humane Society of Tampa Bay's Facebook posts. The society has also upped the ante by putting out a $1,000 reward for anyone who can bring Nina home to her companion safely.
"She will raise my spirits," Macner said.
Because for him, Nina is more than just a pet.
"I want her to be my companion for life."
