LEXINGTON, Ky-- A Lexington, Kentucky teenager is recovering after he set himself on fire while performing a stunt he saw online.
The 15-year-old boy told CBS Affiliate WKYT he was attempting to take part in something known as a "fire challenge", where a person pours alcohol on their skin and lights it on fire.
Videos of people doing the challenge have shown up online. Lexington firefighters responded to the home of the boy's aunt on Appian Way around noon on Friday. They treated him for burns and took him to UK Hospital for further treatment.
The teenager said one thing the videos never showed was the ending, once the person was no longer on fire. He says he now knows how dangerous it can be. Lexington firefighters hope others hear his message and don't try to copy it.
"What they don't show at the end of the videos is the consequences of doing this, getting second and third degree burns," Lexington Fire Department Captain Chris Harrod said.
Lexington Police said they have asked child services to also investigate the incident.
Lexington firefighters told WKYT this case is the first time they've heard of the fire challenge.
