CONCORD, N.C. -- All legs—err, eyes will be on NASCAR'S Coca-Cola 600 race Sunday, but Friday, it was an octopus getting all the attention.
The resident Giant Pacific Octopus at the Sea Life Charlotte-Concord Aquarium predicted #99 Carl Edwards to win it.
Employees dropped five toy cars in the tank simultaneously and waited for the octopus to choose. She wrapped herself around Edwards' car.
"The Giant Pacific Octopus is a perfect creature to provide a competition prediction, as it is a highly intelligent creature," said David Cochran, Display Curator at Sea Life Charlotte-Concord. "Octopuses learn quickly and are even capable of opening jars and solving mazes."
Charlotte Motor Speedway said this is the first time an animal has been used to predict the winner for one of the track's races.
