CHICAGO – Wake Forest senior forward Katie Stengel has been called up to the U.S. Women's National Team for its upcoming friendlies against China, becoming the first current or former Demon Deacon player to join the senior national team.

"We are very excited to see Katie called up to the full national team for the first time," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "This is a really great opportunity for her, and we're looking forward to seeing what she can do at the top level of international soccer."

Stengel, a three-time All-American and Wake Forest's all-time scoring leader, will join the team for training camp before matches against China on April 6 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.and on April 10 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

She joins Virginia's Morgan Brian and UCLA's Kristie Mewis as the only three college players on the 24-person roster.

Stengel has extensive experience in the U.S. Youth National Team system. She was a starter on the squad that won the 2012 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Japan and last month helped the Under-23 team win the Six Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain, totaling a goal and two assists in three games.

The Melbourne, Fla. native tallied 50 goals and 125 points in 75 games at Wake Forest, helping lead the Demon Deacons to their first ACC Championship in 2010 and their first NCAA College Cup in 2011. Her senior season was cut short when she was diagnosed with a blood clot in her leg in October, but she recovered and returned to training in January in preparation for a professional career.
