GREENSBORO, N.C. — Austin Connelly of Irving, Texas, has the lead heading into the final round of the FJ Invitational, posting even-par 70 in the third round to bring his three-day total to 6-under-par 204.
Connelly, a rising senior at Red Oak Academy, stayed at 6-under-par for the tournament with his even-par third round. Connelly battled back birdying Nos. 5 and 17 after starting off the third round with two bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2. The future SMU Mustang is focused and excited to be in contention for the win heading into the final round after tying for third at the 2013 event.
"I didn't feel that much pressure today," Connelly said. "I won't feel much pressure tomorrow and will try to play a good round of golf."
William Register of Burlington, North Carolina, is tied for second with Nick Hardy of Northbrook, Illinois, at 4-under-par 206. Register carded a 2-under-par 68 in the third round. The recent graduate of Walter Williams High School fired four birdies during his consistent third round. Register is ready to compete for the title and knows what a win at the FJ Invitational would mean to him.
"It would mean a lot," Register said. "I haven't done too well in invitationals and I want to prove to myself that I can do it."
Hardy shot even-par 70 to advance in the standings heading into the last day. Hardy, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play at the University of Illinois, is ready to gain some ground in the final round.
"I'm two shots off going into the final round," Hardy said "I'm going to play a little more aggressively and give myself some more opportunities."
Andreas Halvorsen of St. Augustine, Florida, Benjamin Baxter of Flower Mound, Texas, Charles Kim of Cedar Park, Texas, Wes Artac of Kingwood, Texas, Isaiah Logue of Fairfield, Pennsylvania, and KK Limbhasut of Loma Linda, California, are all tied for fourth carding 210 tournament totals.
Tyler Strafaci of Davie, Florida, Benjamin Griffin of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Andrew Orischak of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Spencer Soosman of Westlake Village, California, are all tied for tenth with a tournament total of 211.
Final-round tee times will run from 7-9:50 a.m. off the No. 1 tee at Sedgefield Country Club.
