ELON, N.C. --With new head coachRich Skroskyat the helm, the Elon Phoenix football team held its first practice of the spring on Monday afternoon on the Hunt and Tucker practice fields.
The Phoenix worked out for approximately two hours on a 70-degree afternoon.
Following the first of 15 practices, here were some thoughts from Skrosky:
On the first day of practice:
"It was about what I expected. The anxiety level was high. Guys were anxious. The want to go faster than they need to go. They're trying to please. As we go, every practice we'll get a little better. That's the goal."
On installing a new syestem:
"It's brand new terminology on both sides of the ball. Our special teams probably has the most carry over because a lot of the things that Coach (Scott) Browne had done in the past, we maintained some. On offense and defense, everything is totally different. The terminology is different. It's kind of like going in a classroom and you have to learn something in a new language."
On position battles:
"Everybody's starting from zero. We know that guys have a past here and have a foundation in some things. Right now the reps are all going to be equal."
On if players came out looking to make a good first impression:
"I would suspect that normally happens in an change. But not everyone reacts the same way. For some guys, it's a chore to go back and compete again for what they think they've already achieved."
On the energy level on day one:
"The energy was good. I liked the enthusiasm. We've got to keep that. Every day they've got to come out here and embrace that. If they lose that, we're not doing our jobs."
On his goals for the spring:
"What I told the team this morning is that I want to get the foundation of the offense, defense and special teams in. When they leave, they've got to be very comfortable with that foundation. We're not going to put in a lot of plays this spring. It's all our base stuff. After 15 practices, I want myself and the staff to be able to evaluate here is where our people are and make sure we're utilizing every guy in the best manner."
