CHAPEL HILL - National Freshman of the Year Diamond DeShields has decided to leave the University of North Carolina.

"I do not know or understand why Diamond DeShields has decided to leave the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill," said head coach Sylvia Hatchell.

"As most everyone knows, I was out and missed the entire season with leukemia. Thankfully, I'm in complete remission and will be back 100% for next season. It breaks my heart that I will not have the opportunity to coach Diamond and help develop her on and off the court. I love her and wish her well."

In her only season with the Tar Heels, DeShields averaged 18.0 points per game, setting numerous school and ACC records for a first-year player.

Carolina returns 12 players, including All-ACC forward Xylina McDaniel and freshmen All-America's Allisha Gray and Stephanie Mavunga, and adds five-star guard Jamie Cherry for the 2014-15 season.
