HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- A prosecutor says ex-North Carolina basketball player Will Graves will take drug and alcohol education classes that could lead to the dismissal of misdemeanor drug charges.

Orange County assistant district attorney Jeff Nieman says the 15-hour course is part of a deferred prosecution. Graves was cited in December with marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia while staying at a residence owned by UNC coach Roy Williams.

Graves agreed to pay court costs during Tuesday's appearance. Nieman says charges would be dismissed in January if Graves avoids trouble since he lacks a criminal record.

A team spokesman said Graves was paying rent to stay at the home while working toward his degree and as a part-time team video coordinator.

The case was continued in February because Graves was playing professionally in Argentina.
