Wake Forest incoming freshman Will Zalatoris controlled the second 18 holes to win the US Junior Amateur Championship.
THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Wake Forest incoming freshman Will Zalatoris took control on the second 18 holes and went on to a 5 and 3 victory over Davis Riley in the final of the US Junior Amateur Championship on Saturday.
The fifth time was the charm for Zalatoris, who played in his final US Junior Amateur. He is one of just seven golfers to compete in five US Junior Amateurs and this time, he dominated the field.
Zalatoris shot rounds of 71-69 (-4) to finish tied for sixth in the stroke play portion and the championship. He went into match play at the No. 8-seed and waltzed to a 6 and 5 victory over Caleb Proveaux in the opening round.
On Thursday, he won his opening match 3 and 2 and then came back from a 3-down deficit to top Will Dickson 1-up and move into the quarterfinals. A 3 and 2 victory over top-seeded Sean Crocker gave way to an epic match with Curtis Luck in the semis. He took an early lead and then gave away a 3-up advantage with five holes to play only to make birdie at No. 18 and win 1-up.
On Saturday, there weren't too many players that were going to top Zalatoris. He made a total of 11 birdies and one eagle in 33 holes of the final match.
The morning 18 went back and forth. Down one going to the 18th hole, Zalatoris stuck his approach to within five feet and squared the match headed to lunch. That gave the Plano, Texas, native momentum and he came out and took control with birdies at the first two holes. His lead grew to 3-up with another birdie at No. 8.
After giving a hole back to Riley at No. 11, Zalatoris won the 12th and then holed-out from the fairway at the par-4 14th to put Riley dormie with four to play.
This was just another notch in Zalatoris' great summer. He won the Texas Amateur in June and then topped a very strong field at the Trans Miss just two weeks ago. This all came after carding a 59 earlier this spring.
Zalatoris is set to play in the US Amateur next month at the Atlanta Athletic Club and then will come to campus in late August.
